Reassessment
Information on the Faculty of Education's policy on reassessment.
Reassessment is designed to assist students in passing a subject where:
- their final mark in the subject is a borderline fail; AND
- failing the subject would have a significant impact on course progression.
In accordance with the Assessment and Results Policy (MPF1326), a borderline fail is an overall mark of 45% or more (i.e. a final subject mark between 45% and 49%). While the policy allows the Dean to lower this threshold to 40%, in the Faculty of Education the Dean has determined that the threshold will, in all cases, be retained at 45%.
Reassessment is not automatic and may only be offered where a single subject across the period of enrolment under consideration has been failed. Where more than one subject has been failed, the case will no longer be considered an exceptional circumstance and will be more appropriately managed through standard progression processes and repeating the failed subject(s).
Where students fall within the approved threshold, the Board of Examiners may endorse an offer of reassessment and will also determine the form that reassessment will take. Determinations regarding whether a failure constitutes significant progression impact will be made by the Board of Examiners in alignment with agreed Faculty criteria to ensure consistency of application.
If a student is deemed eligible, they will be notified in writing by the subject coordinator with details of the reassessment format, timeline, and any conditions. Please note that students cannot apply for reassessment, and undertaking reassessment is not compulsory. If a student is unable or chooses not to undertake reassessment, the existing mark in the subject will stand.
The maximum mark that can be awarded for subjects in which reassessment has been granted is 50% (P).
