Attendance Hurdles
Advice on attendance hurdle requirements in Faculty of Education subjects.
Many coursework subjects in the Faculty of Education require students to meet a minimum attendance benchmark (usually 70% or 80% of all classes or activities) in order to pass. Attendance hurdles are in place because participation in scheduled activities is often essential to achieving the learning outcomes of the subject, for example where classes involve discussion, collaboration, practical demonstrations, or assessed in-class tasks. Failure to meet an attendance hurdle will result in a fail for the subject.
Details of attendance hurdles are outlined in the Assessment section of each subject’s Handbook entry. These may apply to both on-campus and online activities, including synchronous and asynchronous components.
Where a student is granted Special Consideration for circumstances that impact their ability to attend classes, the attendance requirement may be reduced, but not below 50% of the identified classes or activities. Students must still meet at least this minimum level of participation to pass the subject.
If a student’s circumstances mean they are unable to attend even 50% of classes or activities, the outcome will typically be managed through Special Consideration by offering an alternative outcome, such as a late withdrawal from the subject. Further information on Special Consideration guidelines and the application process can be found on our Special Consideration page.
Professional experience subjects usually require full attendance (100%) for the placement component, as this is necessary to demonstrate the required teaching practice hours for professional registration (e.g. with the Victorian Institute of Teaching). Further information can be found on our Attendance and Absences on Placement page.
