Dr. Chatelier and Dr. Maire’s research explores perspectives of graduates and school leaders on the effectiveness of IBEC university qualifications within the global field of international school teaching.
The problem
While International Baccalaureate Educator Certificates (IBEC) programmes aim to develop a high-quality, globally mobile International Baccalaureate (IB) teacher workforce, their effectiveness remains unclear. Limited knowledge exists about IBEC's impact on teachers' careers and school communities. There are currently 56 IBEC universities across the world; as IB schools expand worldwide, understanding IBEC's success in preparing educators for IB's unique challenges becomes crucial for ensuring teaching excellence.
The proposed research
With the support of a research grant awarded by the International Baccalaureate, Dr. Chatelier, Dr. Maire and team will investigate the perspectives of graduates and school leaders on the effectiveness of IBEC programmes in preparing educators for the unique challenges of IB schools worldwide.
Research will be conducted with a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A comprehensive online survey targeting 1,000-1,500 IBEC holders will gather data on career impact, teaching efficacy, and leadership perspectives. Semi-structured interviews with 15-20 IBEC graduates and 15-20 school leaders will provide in-depth insights into the perceived value and impact of IBEC programmes.
The analysis will consider the 'idiosyncratic enactment' of IBEC programmes in diverse settings, examining how the global IBEC framework is contextualised through local pedagogic cultures and individual experiences. This approach allows for both generalised findings and highly contextualised interpretations of IBEC's impact on teachers and school communities.
The intended impact
This research project aims to inform continuous improvement in IBEC programmes and services, enhancing their relevance and effectiveness. By providing insights into IBEC's impact on teacher preparation and school communities, the research will support the IB's efforts to provide high-quality education across its growing network of international schools.
