Whether he's in the classroom or out on the sports field, Henry – a Master of Teaching (Secondary) graduate who now teaches at Caulfield Grammar School – is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in students' lives.
After completing a Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Melbourne in 2018, Henry went on to become a humanities teacher and sports coach at Caulfield Grammar School.
“I had a lot of great mentors at the University of Melbourne who’ve had a lot of classroom experience, and their guidance and real-world perspective on the challenges I was facing as a student-teacher were invaluable to me,” Henry says.
The placements he completed as part of his degree helped him build confidence as an educator and equipped him with the practical skillset he would need to teach his own class.
That allowed me to step into the classroom in the smoothest manner possible when my own career began.
Although Henry loves his job, he’s realistic: it’s not always easy.
“I think teaching is a career that certainly can be difficult, but I think the rewards far outweigh the difficulty,” he notes. It's hard work, but – if you ask him – the hard work always pays off.
He credits the strong bonds that develop between teachers and their students, as well as between colleagues who teach together at the same school.
What I love about teaching is the really strong relationships, not only with the students, but with your colleagues as well, and working as a team to help every student get the best possible experience out of their time at school.
Being a teacher provides Henry with a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can only come from knowing your impact extends far beyond yourself.
“Teaching is the most fantastic career, because you’re really making a meaningful difference to the lives of so many people around you. And you can look back at the legacy of that for the rest of your life by watching the students you’ve taught go on to bigger things themselves.”
