Elysia Zickert | Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Teaching was always Elysia's top choice for her future career, so she enrolled in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Melbourne and now teaches English at Caulfield Grammar School.

As students work at their desks, Elysia stands beside one student and explains something about the worksheet, pointing something out to him.

Elysia’s high school years were marked by inspirational teachers, which gave her the idea that the same path could be right for her.

After VCE, she went on to do some tutoring work with young people – and loved it. That sealed the deal.

I really discovered then that teaching was the career for me.

She enrolled in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Melbourne. The highlights of the program were the support she received in her journey and the placements that provided real-world classroom experience.

“The placements were really useful in terms of actually practising what it would be like to be a teacher with that additional support of a clinical [educator] from the university, as well as the classroom teacher from the placement school.”

After graduating, Elysia went on to become an English teacher at Caulfield Grammar School. Now, she has the opportunity to provide her own students with the same inspirational learning experience that she received as a secondary student.

Seeing a student’s face light up as they eventually understand a concept can be really rewarding as a teacher.

"I think as well, there’s also day-to-day life skills that the students learn, that we can feel that we’re encouraging them to be kind and caring global citizens.”

Elysia stands in front of her classroom, smiling as she explains the lesson.
