Alumni Early Career Award

Rex Sutton

Rex Sutton has transformed a previously disengaged school music program into a thriving, inclusive, and high-impact initiative. In under two years, they have grown student participation from zero to 65 students, established five active bands, and are preparing a concert band, providing accessible pathways for students of all abilities.

Through innovative programs such as lunchtime concerts, assembly performances, the Annual Arts Showcase, and family friendly music festivals, Rex has fostered student confidence, collaboration, and leadership, while engaging families and the broader community.

These events ensure students who may not otherwise have access to cultural experiences can participate fully in music and the arts. With a strong focus on equity, Rex has secured funding for instruments, subsidised lessons, and created opportunities for students from low socio-economic and culturally diverse backgrounds in West Melbourne.

They have also built a collaborative, skilled music staff team and implemented sustainable structures to ensure ongoing program growth. Through their leadership, innovation, and commitment to equity, Rex has created a music program that enriches student learning, strengthens community engagement, and sets a benchmark for educational excellence.
