New publication by AERC's Dr Zhonghua Zhang

Assessment & Evaluation Research Centre (AERC) proudly celebrates the publication of a new journal article co-authored by Senior Research Fellow Dr Zhonghua Zhang, together with national and international collaborators.

Sun, S. Z., Beswick, B., Zhang, Z., & Song, H. (2026). Critical thinking performance patterns among Australian and Chinese higher education students: a latent profile analysis. Studies in Higher Education, 1–16. https://doi.org/10.1080/03075079.2026.2653674

The study examines tensions in the critical thinking literature, arguing that conflicting conclusions arise from narrow, implicit constructs that fail to capture its multidimensional nature. Using a model that integrates cognitive skills and epistemic beliefs, it shows that students’ critical thinking profiles are diverse and cannot be reduced to a single dimension, offering a framework to better interpret variation across contexts.
