Abstract: Education is a powerful tool for rewriting intergenerational narratives, yet systemic inequities continue to marginalise First Nations students. This presentation explores how culturally responsive frameworks can transform education systems to better serve Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners. Drawing on live case studies across national education initiatives, this session highlights the importance of embedding Indigenous perspectives, co-creating equity with First Nations communities, and implementing culturally rooted assessments that amplify strengths. By addressing equity locally, we hope to support the creation of scalable models that redefine how global education systems serve marginalised populations. The presentation will challenge participants to reflect on their role in fostering equity and to consider how their work can amplify the strengths of all learners.

Bio:

Mr. Todd Nelson, a proud Dunghutti man with ancestral ties to the Yuin nation, raised on Awabakal/Wonnarua country and currently residing on Ngunnawal country, has over 15 years of experience across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors. As a manager at Ninti One Limited Pty Ltd, he drives initiatives that center First Nations perspectives in education, including the development of the national First Nations Teacher Strategy and the Preschool Outcomes Measure (POM). His work also includes evaluating five Closing the Gap initiatives for the Department of Education. In addition to his professional roles, Mr. Nelson serves on the UnitingCare Kippax board, contributing to community-focused efforts in education, employment, and family development and is a father, partner, son, brother, and uncle. His personal journey and professional expertise underscore his commitment to creating equitable education systems that honour and amplify First Nations voices.
