AERC Hosts: Dr. Ilana Finefter-Rosenbluh "Teaching Assessment in an Era of Student Voice and AI: Challenges and Opportunities"
Abstract:
Student voice—encompassing participation, collaboration, and leadership in school decision-making—has become a central focus of education reforms and assessment policies in numerous nations. Initiatives such as student perception surveys to assess teaching are increasingly promoted by educational leaders and policymakers, reflecting commitments to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This session explores the impact of student voice-based assessment data on teaching practice in schools, considering emerging ethical complexities of (in)authentic voice in an era where social media and AI-generated content can blur the boundaries between students’ own perspectives and machine-assisted responses. It examines how, despite efforts to empower students in teaching assessment processes, current initiatives often reinforce performative pressures, challenge teachers’ ethic of care, and paradoxically disadvantage the very students they aim to support. The session concludes by identifying opportunities for the ethical and effective use of student voice data in teaching assessment within increasingly algorithmically mediated educational environments.
