Education Policy in Practice

The Jean Monnet Module: Education Policy in Practice (EPP) - European Education Policy and National Systems, is a graduate subject taught at the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. This subject was developed by Dr Gosia Klatt and Dr Stanley Koh building on experiences of the previous subject titled: Education Policy: Study Tour. This Jean Monnet Module has received funding as part of the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union.

The subject is multi-disciplinary bringing together political science, sociology and education studies, and is relevant across all education sectors including primary, secondary and vocational education and training. The main objective of this subject is to build into the MEd course a comprehensive overview of the EU, investigating innovations, advancements and challenges in educational policy and practice in the EU. Students will examine education policy and policy reform issues in the context of EU policy development, implementation and evaluation. It provides students with the opportunity to engage with European education policy issues through a structured visitation program, which include briefings, workshops and seminars at selected government, non-government and educational organisations in Europe.

I appreciated the opportunity to connect my theoretical understanding with the practicality of the subject. Seeing diverse institutions challenged my beliefs and forced me to reflect on my practice, and I believe it has made me a better teacher.

Having the opportunity to reflect critically on how theoretical frameworks manifest in education policy across three diverse international education systems was invaluable. I developed a deeper appreciation for the way in which context shapes comparative studies, and informs research design and policy.
