Melbourne Metrics at Hong Kong Academy to drive change in access

In March 2026, the team at Melbourne Metrics convened 70+ colleagues from 24 schools in 14 countries across the New Metrics International Schools (NMIS) network for a two-day seminar at Hong Kong Academy.

NMIS aims to use competency-based assessment as a lever to drive change in schools to broaden the ways we assess, recognise and celebrate students' knowhow and successes.

The Melbourne Metrics team led a rich and energising few days of professional exchange, inquiry, and forward planning. Embedded in a partner school, the seminar brought together leaders, teachers, researchers, and partners committed to advancing next‑generation assessment and deepening our shared understanding of developing proudly human competencies.

Across the program, participants engaged in a wide range of learning experiences: leadership panels examining system‑level perspectives; student and teacher conversations that grounded the work in authentic experiences, structured triad dialogues that supported cross‑school collaboration and codesign workshops to build new assessment tools of future-focused competencies like Socially Responsible Leadership.

The sense of collective purpose was palpable, and it is clear that the NMIS community is committed to shaping assessment practices that genuinely support learners to grow, thrive, and be recognised for who they are and what they can do.
