Emma Love | Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship

A graduate of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship, now Lead Teacher of Science and STEM at Blackburn High School, Emma Love shares insights on the value of mentorship, collaboration, and building strong foundations for a thriving teaching career.

1. What course did you study at the Faculty of Education (then MGSE)?Emma Love

I completed the Master of Teacher (Secondary) Internship which I started in 2019 and finished in 2021.

2. What do you remember fondly from your time there?

My most fond memories are of the people I connected with during the course. Both with my fellow students as we supported each other through our challenges, and with the tutors and lecturers, who were just as valuable - their experience and wise words were always wanted and needed!

3. What do you love most about your current role?

Working with the Science Faculty to plan engaging curriculum is the best part of my job. I also enjoy coaching staff on their teaching practice to ensure that all teachers and students can have the best learning experience in the classroom.

4. What helped you most as a graduate teacher when you first started out?

My peers in my course were a massive help to have - other new teachers to talk to so I didn’t feel so alone. Some key teachers at my placement school that took the time to work with and coach me were integral to my survival and development as a teacher. I wouldn’t be the teacher I am today without their nurturing and advice, and I hope I can pass on this as I continue to coach staff now.

5. What advice can you give current students about how they approach placement?

When you are placed in a school it is important to go and observe as many teachers as you can from as many different faculties as possible. Once you are a full time teacher you don’t have as much time to observe, so taking the opportunity to learn from others when you can is key. Also, make sure you observe the Head of Faculty(s) that you are in and have a conversation about teaching with them. This is a good way to get time with them to discuss teaching, to show your interest and make an impact as these people are often on panels for roles you might apply for in the future.
