The Diversity and Inclusion Podcast

The Diversity and Inclusion podcast from the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne aims to create a space for staff and students to share their stories about what Diversity and Inclusion mean to them and how they have approached Diversity and Inclusion in their studies, teaching and research.

The podcast host and editor is Dr Alys Mendus, a Research Fellow in the Diversity and Inclusion portfolio.

Episode #4 // Why Universal Design for Learning is Important with Amanda Samson

Today I talk to Dr Amanda Samson a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne and Subject Coordinator for many subjects including an undergraduate module called School Breath where she was able to codesign with the students and use UDL in practice. Amanda also received funding to create a training module in Mentoring. This podcast adds to the conversation in Podcast 3 with April Edwards offering more stories and ideas about using Universal Design for Learning in your teaching and workplaces.

I am welcoming here April Edwards who is a Teaching Academic in Languages and Literacies Education in the Faculty of Education and has a lot of experience of using Universal Design for Learning, which is a teaching and learning approach which aims to create inclusive environments for all students. In this podcast we will talk to April about her experiences completing the module in Universal Design for Learning, and the impacts that this has had on her own teaching practice. In our conversation we will also talk about the benefits of using UDL and how UDL approaches can help create a linguistically and culturally responsive teaching pedagogy.

Today I talk to Dr. Lara Mossman and Dr. Rachel Colla from the Centre for Wellbeing Science at the University of Melbourne in the Faculty of Education. Lara and Rachel have come here to talk about the Wellbeing Integrated Learning Design (WILD) framework which they have created to help educate the educators in how they are teaching wellbeing and in this podcast they will share their thoughts on its links to Diversity and Inclusion.
