Ryan Docking

Master of Teaching (Secondary)

“I always wanted to be a teacher and I was particularly inspired by an awesome English teacher I had in Years 11 and 12.

I was attracted to this course because I wanted to gain as high a qualification as possible. So far, I’ve been impressed by the calibre of staff – they are very active in education during turbulent times. It’s impressive to be taught by teachers who are involved in policy developments and it’s great to have ready access to them.

My first placement was very challenging but I found the subjects I was studying helped, in particular one that looked at disadvantage and its impacts. This really came into its own for me because I was working with students from low socio-economic-status backgrounds. I felt like I was learning in baby steps, but looking back it was a good experience. My mentor teacher was really good and the camaraderie and support from other teachers has been great too.

In second semester I’m completing my placement in rural Victoria, just outside Colac. I’m really looking forward to it – I’m from the country, and I’m looking forward to seeing a country school from a difference perspective.”
