Meet Deon Entwisle
Master of Teaching (Secondary)
What is your career/where are you working now?
I am a music teacher at Genazzano FCJ College.
What inspired you to enrol in your course at MGSE?
I have always loved music. I started teaching piano and harp as a teenager and realised that I was passionate about music education. I enrolled in MGSE to expand my teaching opportunities.
What is the best thing you gained from doing the course?
The placement component of my course gave me a strong foundation and credibility in obtaining future work. My first placement school hired me and gave me many opportunities. This made me more employable and opened up more possibilities in my career. They also supported my research in the Master of Teaching, and my research was conducted at the school.
What did you find most challenging about the course?
Balancing university classes, assignments and placement with personal life was a challenge at times. Outside of university, I was also working part-time, which was sometimes difficult, as the course demands a lot of your time throughout the two years.
Who/what was your greatest support?
My placement mentors and colleagues have been very supportive throughout the course and my career. The placements allowed me the opportunity to forge strong bonds with my mentors and I am still in contact with them today.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about doing this course?
To be prepared for a very intense and demanding period, however at the same time it is very rewarding. Teaching is a very ‘giving’ profession, but it’s extremely fulfilling.
What are your plans for the future?
I am enjoying my current school and would like to think about completing a Ph.D in education further down the road.
Is there anything else you would like to add about your experience?
The quality of the course is excellent. The tutors and professors were very passionate about education and served as an inspiration to pre-service teachers.
