MyTimetable

Our timetabling team works to provide an equitable and consistent class allocation service for students in accordance with University policy and the Faculty of Education guidelines.

The University uses a preference-based timetabling system called MyTimetable. Through this system, students can view, plan and enter preferred times for their classes according to a set timeline. At the end of the preference-entry period, the system runs an algorithm to randomly allocate students to classes (a process called the sort), based on entered preferences.

MyTimetable Process

The preference-based timetabling model comprises three main stages:

  1. Plan: through this stage students can access a read-only view of the published timetable and can create and save timetable plans (even for subjects in which they’re not yet enrolled).
  2. Preference: students enter their preferences for classes in each of the subjects in which they’re enrolled (with 1 being most preferred). If there is only one option for an activity the system will allocate automatically.

    1. Review: once students receive their timetables, they can review their allocations and
    2. Adjust: students can make adjustments to their timetables, by allocating themselves to different classes with available places, or joining wait lists for full classes by logging swap requests.

Master of Teaching

MyTimetable information and schedules

The Master of Teaching is a unique program with a specialized structure, so allocation timelines for subjects in these courses may be alternative to those for the rest of the University. Please refer to the schedules below for timetabling advice specific to each course and year of study.

(Note: First half year 2024 allocation for all pre-2022 intake Master of Teaching subjects will open from Thursday 7 December at 10am.)

Master of Teaching timetables are highly complex. Unlike most programs across the University, subjects for these courses are all core, incorporate a range of specialist spaces, and necessitate unique clash avoidance strategies. Master of Teaching timetabling guidelines are therefore slightly different to those for other programs, to ensure the timetable is practicable.

Master of Teaching students should be aware that, while there will be opportunity to preference classes (where there are multiple sittings of the same activity), it is nevertheless expected you have availability to attend any of the classes scheduled for the subjects in which you are enrolled.

Timetabling guidelines

  • All students should have a complete and clash-free timetable by the commencement of classes.
  • Students should check their University email regularly, for advice and updates related to the timetabling process.
  • Priority timetabling is offered to students with documented ongoing religious, medical or childcare arrangements in place, and accommodated where possible.
  • Due to the complexity of the MTeach structure we are unfortunately unable to priority allocate students around work and/or any other personal commitments not included in the above-mentioned priority service. We ask that students please not contact Faculty Timetabling with these requests.
  • Students are asked not to approach teaching staff members with timetabling requests.
  • Students with queries about or requiring help with timetabling can submit a Timetabling Assistance Request.

Priority timetabling

A priority timetabling service is offered to those Master of Teaching students with documented ongoing medical, religious or childcare commitments. While every effort is made to accommodate these special requests, please be aware that it may not always be possible to secure all preferred classes. Applications for priority timetabling are invited from the start of the timetabling period, in the planning and preference stages. It is strongly recommended that all priority timetabling applications are submitted before the sort, while places in all classes are still available to us.

Eligible students with priority timetabling requests can submit a Timetabling Assistance Request, including evidence to support the application. Relevant documentation might include a letter from a school, childcare centre or health professional, or a birth certificate identifying the applicant to be the parent of a dependent.

Note that we are unfortunately not able to accommodate priority timetabling requests for work commitments of any kind, including PTT. Because of the complex nature of Master of Teaching timetables, the expectation of students in accepting admission to these courses is that they will have availability to attend any of the scheduled classes.

All other Coursework Programs

The class allocation timelines for subjects in the Faculty's Professional and Continuing Education programs align with those of the broader University.

Please refer to the MyTimetable website for advice about these key dates, as well as information on the timetabling process. Note that there will be two main timetable preference entry periods for each half year timetabling period:

First half year:

  • Summer period = Summer, January, February, Semester 1 Early Start, Semester 1 Extended, Year Long Extended subjects
  • Semester 1 period = Semester 1, Year Long, March, April and May subjects

Second half year:

  • Winter period: Winter, June, July, Semester 2 Early Start, Semester 2 Extended subjects
  • Semester 2 period: Semester 2, August, September, October, November and December subjects

Timetabling guidelines and responsibilities

It is the responsibility of students to select a clash-free combination of subjects, within course guidelines and according to the course structure, in each half year period of study.

Students are encouraged to read carefully over their program structure and subject options as detailed in the Handbook, and to confirm contact hours of chosen subjects via the timetable link in the ‘Dates and Locations’ field of each Handbook subject entry, or through the MyTimetable planning tool.

Students having difficulty selecting a clash-free suite of subjects should contact subject coordinators to confirm whether they can meet all their subject requirements with some minor clashing. Note it is the responsibility of students to ensure they can meet all subject attendance requirements in the instance of timetable clashes, and that timetable clashes are not grounds for special consideration.

Our team has developed a timetable overview for the Master of Education, Master of TESOL and Master of Modern Languages courses, to help students of those courses to select a workable suite of subjects for enrolment.

All students need to ensure they are allocated to classes for all their enrolled scheduled subjects through MyTimetable. Note that allocation to single-sitting classes (where there is only one class for an activity on offer) is automated.
