Celebrating our best and brightest

The Melbourne Graduate School of Education had a full house last night to celebrate the outstanding achievements of students, graduates and staff at our annual Awards Evening, Tuesday 30 May.

This year an impressive 55 awards and scholarships were presented to 96 awardees, recognising a broad range of areas across research, teaching and engagement.

In her opening address Professor Lesley Farrell, Dean of the Graduate School, congratulated winners on their superb efforts.

“To our current and past students I extend my personal ‘congratulations.’ You have worked incredibly hard and we are proud of you,” she said.

“To our staff receiving awards, I acknowledge your extraordinary contributions over the years. We wouldn’t be the Graduate School we are today without our outstanding academic and professional staff.”

Dr Sandra Milligan, Director of our Assessment Research Centre was the proud recipient of the Doctoral Research Prize for her thesis titled Measurement of the ability to generate higher order learning in MOOCs, while the International Centre for Classroom Research took home the MGSE Research Leadership Excellence Awards.

A highlight of the evening was the inaugural MGSE Professional Staff Excellence Award, which went to Ms Joann Cattlin, Project Manager of the $2 million Australian Research Council Linkage Project, Innovative Learning Environments and Teacher Change.

The evening also included a presentation by Dr Scott Flower from the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education.

Dr Flower received the MGSE Teaching Excellence Award for his subject, Fieldwork in Complex and Hostile Places, which he established following the sexual assault of a PhD student undertaking fieldwork research in Papua New Guinea in 2011. Prior to this, there was no professional field research training available for graduate students.

The evening concluded with a speech by the University of Melbourne Chancellor Mr Allan Myers AC QC thanking award recipients for their exceptional contributions to the University and broader community.

“Sitting and listening here tonight I’m convinced that this university really has an impact on making the world a better place,” he said.

The Graduate School extends a big thank you to all of our sponsors and donors for their generous support, and congratulates all winners on their achievements.
