Negotiating the S and M within Pre- Service Teacher Integrated STEM Teaching

Mathematic Education Group Research Seminar

Integrated STEM education is said to offer the possibility of development of 21st century skills such as collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking. Through developing these transferable skills we potentially prepare our students for as yet unimagined future employment. It is also claimed that STEM learning will lead to sustained engagement within its constituent disciplines. In this seminar, a research project where Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education attempt to facilitate integrated STEM learning with upper primary students will be shared. The PST’s efforts to move through the various STEM disciplines in a synergistic and purposeful manner will be examined. The question of whether the S or the M dominates their integrated STEM teaching will also be investigated.
