A new style of teacher education

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) combines study and classroom teaching, providing a way for people considering teaching as a profession to gain their qualification while earning a salary.

“We started the three-year internship program to create an employment-based pathway for high quality, career-change applicants to immerse themselves in the teaching profession, without having to return to university for two years to qualify and register as a teacher,” Course Coordinator of the Internship program, Dr Merryn Dawborn-Gundlach says.

While traditional graduate teacher education is a combination of intensive placements and academic study, the internship program has interns teaching in schools four to five days a week over the three years.

The Internship program is an alternative to the Melbourne Graduate School of Education’s (MGSE) Master of Teaching (Secondary), catering to those who may not have the opportunity to continue or return to study on a full-time basis.

“It is a great option for people considering a profession in teaching who don’t wish to return to a typical university course,” Dr Dawborn-Gundlach says.  For those looking for such an alternative, the Internship program is the perfect pathway to a career in teaching, and it allows people to make an impact in classrooms straight away.

Just like the MGSE’s standard Master of Teaching, the Internship program has a strong focus on the direct application of the theory and pedagogy studied at university. The Internship, however, takes a more immersive approach with interns diving into a significant amount of classroom teaching from very early on, and teaching full time in their final year.

The program offers a similar, comprehensive support structure to MGSE’s standard Master of Teaching streams, with face to face and online clinical specialist support from the MGSE, and mentor support from schools.

Our partnership schools who are employing current interns find the program has several benefits. Many interns have spent time working as professionals in other fields, such as in engineering, science, law and business, and bring a diverse range of perspectives and transferable skills to the teaching profession.

“These high-quality aspiring teachers have excellent subject content knowledge and often extensive life experiences that feed into their teaching philosophy,” Dr Dawborn-Gundlach says.

Dr Dawborn-Gundlach’s favourite aspect of the Internship program is seeing career-change interns appreciate the value of teaching and the importance of creating lessons that engage students who might otherwise be disengaged.
