Recent changes to staffing approvals

The University continues to assess the financial impact of the COVID-19 and has recently introduced a new staffing approval process. Effective now, all non-essential appointments are to be deferred and requests for essential staff will be assessed and approved by the Provost (for academic appointments) and the COO (for professional appointments), with the exception of externally funded positions which continue unchanged.

Essential appointments are defined as:

  • New positions that deliver business critical work or activities. Business critical is defined as work or activities required to meet legal, safety, regulatory obligations
  • New positions that are required to support the COVID-19 response
  • Replacement positions that are required to support critical business continuity

Divisions have been asked to redirect any available capacity to critical teaching activity wherever possible. Where class sizes and subject offerings have changed, teaching loads will be recalculated and staff who have had reductions in their load will be asked to take on new load.

Consistent with recent advice from the DVC-R, all non-essential research is to be reconsidered and in some instances reprioritised.

Please contact People and Culture if you have any questions about staffing requests or would like any advice as to whether a request may fit within the new guidelines. To reiterate, all non-essential staffing requests will not be approved.

Academic Early Confirmation and Promotion Round 2020

Chancellery have made a decision to delay the Academic promotions timetable for 2020.  This is in recognition of the current pressure on academic staff, both applicants and supervisors, in response to the COVID-19 situation.

An updated version of the timetable is now live on the Academic Careers @ Melbourne page on Staff Hub, under ‘Promotion’.  A majority of dates have been shifted back by six weeks to allow academic staff additional time to prepare applications and reports.

As a result of this decision, MGSE deadline has been extended to Wednesday 15 April for intention to apply for promotion. As per the normal process, please send an email confirming your intention to apply for promotion to mgse-hr@unimelb.edu.au, by the deadline.

Those staff who have kindly agreed to sit on the 2020 Level C – E academic promotions panels this year will be contacted by Stephanie Watson accordingly to discuss revised panel dates.
