Public Webinar hosted by the REEaCh Centre

Children’s literacy and mathematical competencies are a critical platform for their successful functioning as individuals in society. However, many children are at risk of not reaching sufficient competence levels; in particular those with low socioeconomic status backgrounds who may not receive the home support needed to develop to their full potential. Consequently, we are in need of intervention approaches that support young children’s mathematical and literacy competencies directly, so that they are ready to start school with the ability to learn adequately. In this presentation, Professor Frank Niklas will provide information about children’s development in their home learning environment and discuss findings of (digital) intervention studies in the family context.

Frank Niklas is Professor for Educational Psychology and Family Studies at the University of Munich (LMU), Germany. He also holds an honorary position at The University of Melbourne, where he conducted a two-year post-doc fellowship between 2013 and 2015. His research focuses on (digital) interventions in children’s home learning environments and the development of children’s competencies. Currently, his team and he are conducting the longitudinal intervention study “Learning4Kids”, an EU-funded project on the development of mathematical and literacy competencies and the potential effect of learning applications for tablet computers.in the family context.
