Adding featured news and events
This page details how you can add featured news and event items to the front page of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education website.
The way that this list works is by making use of individual Asset IDs. Asset IDs are unique identifiers, and every asset (including news and event items) has one.
Below is a picture of the featured news and events section of the Melbourne Graduate School of Education home page. This is what we will be changing in the following steps.
Use the navigation above to jump between the steps of this tutorial.
To begin with, we'll need to navigate to the featured news and events page in the Edit+ interface.
To get there, type /_edit on the end of the MGSE URL. For the purposes of changing featured news and event items, it's easiest to type this on the end of the home page URL (http://education.unimelb.edu.au).
Once you are in the Edit+ interface, use the Asset Finder to navigate to the featured news and events page under the home page.
One you reach the featured news and events page, change the status of the page to Safe Edit, and save the page.
Open the Asset Finder again (don't worry, we'll return soon).
Navigate to the news or event item which you want to feature in the Asset Finder. Once you find the item don't click "into it - just single click it.
You will notice that in the bottom-right of the Edit+ screen the Asset ID of the news/event Item. This is what we will be using to build our featured list. Copy the Asset ID.
After you have copied to Asset ID, close the Asset Finder. You should still be on the featured news and events page - if you aren't, just navigate to it using the Asset finder.
Once back on the featured news and events page, click the Show additional options button.
This will reveal the section where we will be pasting in the Asset IDs of all the items we want shown on the home page (shown below). In the field labelled Value, you can paste up to 4 Asset IDs separated by a comma (note: don't use any spaces). Any news or event Asset IDs inserted in to this section will show up on the home page as a featured item. They will appear in the same order that their IDs are listed in.
After you've pasted in your Assett ID, save the featured news and events page, and then preview it.
If you are satsified with your changes, go back to the details screen and change the status of the featured news and events page to live.
Finally, visit http://education.unimelb.edu.au/_recache to recache the homepage with your new item included. Otherwise your content should show up in approximately half an hour.
