The Master of Teaching (Primary) qualifies you to teach across all primary years as a generalist teacher, with in-depth knowledge in literacy and mathematics, and a specialist area.
An undergraduate degree from an approved institution.
All applicants must also:
- meet English language requirements, and
- complete the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT) prior to applying.

- Full-time study, comprising four semesters over two years
- 200 points of coursework.
The first three semesters focus on your development as a primary teacher, equipping you to teach across the curriculum and personalise learning to meet students’ individual needs.
You will become familiar with different approaches to teacher-led research, and based on your previous studies and semester results, you can choose to specialise in one of the following areas:
- the Arts
- Health and Physical Education
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
In the second year, you will choose to follow either the coursework or research pathway.
Coursework candidates must complete:
- Compulsory coursework, including a Capstone project
- 1 x elective (with the option of an enriched placement).
Enriched placements allow you to undertake work experience in different education settings, e.g. in rural Australia, in an indigenous community, or in a museum or art gallery. Eligibility is subject to meeting academic requirements.
Research candidates must complete:
- Compulsory coursework
- A substantial research project in an area of interest.
Completion of the research option allows progress to a PhD (subject to meeting academic requirements).
The research pathway is only available to students who achieve an average of 75% or above in the first year.

Please note: the Commonwealth Government of Australia now requires all students undertaking initial teacher education courses in Australia to pass a literacy and numeracy test. Attaining a satisfactory standard in this test is a hurdle requirement for successful completion of the course.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) will enable you to apply for provisional registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as a primary teacher.
If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body.
You may also choose to pursue a career in a related field, such as:
- policy formation
- education research
- assessment and evaluation
- youth health and wellbeing.

Australian Government loan schemes are available for domestic students to help you to defer all or part of your tuition fees, depending on the type of offer you receive:
- if you receive an offer for an Australian fee-paying place, you may be eligible for the FEE-HELP loan program
- if you receive an offer for a Commonwealth Supported Place, you may be eligible for the HECS-HELP loan program.
With both schemes, you do not need to repay the loan until your income reaches a minimum repayment threshold.

1. Complete the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool
You must complete the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT) prior to applying.
TCAT takes approximately 70 - 90 minutes to complete and contains both long and short answers used to assess your suitability for Melbourne Graduate School of Education courses.

We accept direct online applications from domestic and international applicants.
Domestic applicants who apply directly may be eligible to receive an early offer before Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) offers are released.
International applicants can apply online or through our overseas representatives.
Recent University of Melbourne undergraduate students who apply directly may be eligible for guaranteed entry, which gives them the opportunity to secure a place in the Master of Teaching before all other applicants. If you meet the eligibility criteria we will will identify you as a guaranteed entry applicant when we assess your application.
Apply via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) administers the application process for Graduate Entry Teaching for Victorian institutions.
VTAC applications are open to domestic applicants only.
If you are submitting your application directly to the University, you may be required to provide the following supporting documentation:
- Previous academic transcripts
- Evidence of degree completion (testamur)
- Evidence of English language proficiency
- Evidence of completion of the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT).
Applicants who wish to apply via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) should see the documents required page on the VTAC website.

Without doubt, the most valuable aspect of the course was having the opportunity to bridge the gap between cutting edge educational research and how this materialises in the everyday classroom. The clinical teaching model is the backbone of my teaching practice, enabling me to effectively meet the individual needs of all children in my class. Given that a huge component of the course included practical placements in schools, I was able to build a suitcase of teaching strategies to support me in my graduate year.
