Teaching (Secondary) Internship
In the Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship you are paid to teach in a secondary school while completing your teaching degree.
Following a rigorous selection process, we match applicants who have the right mix of outstanding academic results, experience and aptitude to teach in secondary schools around Victoria.
Throughout the three year program, you will be provided with an exceptionally strong support network of mentors and coaches to help you transition into leading a classroom. You will continue your academic studies alongside teaching so you can constantly apply what you are learning.
- An undergraduate degree from an approved institution
- Previous study that satisfies the requirements for two learning areas.
All applicants must also:
- meet English language requirements
- complete the Teacher Capability Assessment Tool (TCAT) prior to applying
- successfully complete a selection interview.
An offer of admission can only be made to applicants who:
- have been granted Permission to Teach (PTT) by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Successful applicants will be notified about when and how to apply for PTT.
- have been appointed into a teaching vacancy with a participating school through the matching process.
Applicants who already hold a recognised initial teacher education qualification (primary and/or secondary) are not eligible for the program.
This course is a Victorian Government endorsed initiative to address workforce shortages and is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
- Course code: MC-TEACHSI
- Three years of study while you are employed and teaching at a secondary school
- 200 points of coursework.
The course starts in November with a six-week study program and school induction. You will then commence employment in a school the following January from the beginning of term 1.
You will complete 150 points of coursework over the first two years while teaching on a reduced teaching load (0.8 FTE), enabling time for university studies.
In your final year, you will transition to fulltime employment (1.0 FTE) while completing 50 points through capstone studies and electives, or a research project.
Study is structured around five campus-based intensives with additional study conducted online throughout each year.
Detailed course and subject information for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship can be found in the University Handbook (MC-TEACHSI).
Please note: the Commonwealth Government of Australia now requires all students undertaking initial teacher education courses in Australia to pass a literacy and numeracy test. Attaining a satisfactory standard in this test is a hurdle requirement for successful completion of the course.
For more information see Literacy and Numeracy Test for Master of Teaching students (PDF, 262 KB).
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) Internship will qualify you for full registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as a secondary teacher.
If you intend to teach outside Victoria, we recommend you check registration requirements with the relevant body.

I really appreciated having the opportunity to have classes that are entirely my own. I felt the flexibility and freedom to try different things without fear, but also with the support from my school, mentor, transition coach and staff at the University. As I made changes in the classroom I had the opportunity to analyse their effects and adjust my teaching when necessary – that was a very important part.
