Teacher pay deal welcome: Dinham

Professor Stephen Dinham OAM, has welcomed the enterprise bargaining resolution reached by the Australian Education Union and the Victorian Government last night, but has flagged there is still work to be done to shape a salary / career structure for the teaching profession.

“It's a welcome overdue settlement which fortunately is not dependent on nebulous productivity off sets,” he said. “What is now needed is to operationalise the new Australian standards for teachers to provide a career long salary structure to inform, recognise and reward teachers' ongoing professional learning. This is far preferable to half-baked merit pay schemes advocated previously.”

For more information on Professor Dinham’s proposals to link the National Professional Standards for Teachers to salary / career structures, see his Dean’s Lecture slides or video.

Professor Stephen Dinham OAM is Director of Learning and Teaching in the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education, and President-elect of the Australian College of Educators.
