Informal algebraic reasoning abilities of primary school students

Dr Lee has investigated prior research related to word problem solving and categorised strategies in three levels: Arithmetical reasoning, pre-algebraic reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, and then subdivided into more detailed types of reasoning. She investigated informal algebraic reasoning used in word problems related to equations of 839 primary school students from grade 1 to 6 in two Korean schools. In this seminar hosted by the Graduate School’s Mathematics Education group, Dr Lee will discuss possibilities and methods to connect pre-formal algebraic reasoning to formal algebraic reasoning.
