Teaching pragmatics to advanced learners of Chinese
Pragmatic competence has been an ignored aspect in teaching Chinese as a second language until recently. Drawing on results of a PhD research which examines the effectiveness of a Chinese pragmatic course taught to a group of advanced learners of Chinese, the presenter will discuss the teachability of Chinese pragmatics, the essential content to be included in a pragmatic course, and the effective teaching models and strategies.
Shuai Wang is in his final year of PhD study at Peking University and a visiting scholar at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. His areas of research interests and expertise include teaching Chinese as a second language, teaching Chinese culture, and Chinese pragmatics.
