The Past, Present and Future of Evaluation
Deans lecture series 2013
About the lecture
Presented by Professor Michael Scriven
Claremont Graduate University.
Given the development of education evaluation over the past few decades, it is time to transform our thinking about evaluation. This presentation traces its development based on six steps common to most disciplines (ability, skill, expertise, guild, profession, discipline) and four steps unusual or unique to evaluation (trans-discipline, alpha-discipline, exemplar discipline, and ethical foundation). There has been a huge dip in the status of evaluation as a discipline as it moved through some of these steps, and although there has been some semblance of a recovery, it is now necessary to rebuild the foundations of evaluation.
